The VALORISH consortium met in Vigo to review progress, exchange insights, and visit key facilities supporting fish by-product valorisation. Read the full update
On November 25th and 26th, 2025, the VALORISH consortium gathered in Vigo, Spain, for a two-day meeting. This meeting provided a valuable opportunity to showcase progress, exchange feedback, and reinforce collaboration across the different partners and organisations of the project.
Sharing results, refining next steps
During the session, partners presented recent advances performed in the last six months: especially those related to feedstock management, fish-oil extraction from fish by-products, and the development of computational tools to support optimised, circular biorefinery processes. The discussions and feedback (including from our Advisory Board member, Luis Allegue) helped sharpen the upcoming work plan and set clear priorities for the next months.
From Lab to Industry: What We Learned During Two Visits
As part of the meeting, consortium members visited two reference installations in the VALORISH project:
- Grupo Nueva Pescanova: walking through the processing lines offered an impressive overview of large-scale seafood processing; seeing these operations up close provided valuable context for how VALORISH’s biorefinery workflows may integrate in real-world industrial environments.
- ANFACO-CYTMA: visiting their facilities where fish-oil extraction and proteolytic fermentation activities are taking place reinforced our understanding of the technological and operational challenges linked to turning by-products into high-value bioproducts.
These visits strengthened the link between our research efforts and real industrial practices, a crucial step towards ensuring that VALORISH’s solutions are not only scientifically robust but also practically applicable.
